Chapter Thirteen

“We have to do something, Tim. We’re almost at the shelter. They’ll kill us when they’re finished with us,” whispered Amanda.

“I know, but what? They’re too fast and strong for me, and we’ve got no weapons. What do you expect me to do?”

One of the zombies trailing them heard them whispering and pushed Tim. He fell, banging his head on the blood-soaked road. The zombie grunted something unintelligible and kicked him, forcing him to get back up again and continue their journey.

They had been walking for days, and both Amanda and Timothy were exhausted, physically and mentally. Tim was used to it—he’d spent enough time in Iraq and Afghanistan on the trail of insurgents—but that had been years before. And he hadn’t had Amanda with him or been pushed along by bloodthirsty zombies either. The roads were awash with dead, rotting bodies, dogs, cats, and rats that had lost any initial fear of humans they might once have had. It was only the presence of the two zombies that prevented them being mauled by starving dogs.

And yet, the panorama before them—utter desolation and destruction as far as the eye could see—was nothing compared to the smell. A smog hung in the air that reeked of filth and decay; the land was not polluted with car exhaust fumes and belching power plants, but with death and rot. When the wind blew in their direction, every now and again, a gust of some potent, foul stench would smother them as though a living thing, causing them to gag and retch. Amanda and Tim were convinced it was as close to Hell as it was physically possible to get. Accentuated by the vast swarms of flies with their incessant buzzing that almost sent them mad with despair and disgust, they also considered it akin to walking through an abandoned war zone.

They walked further along, stumbling over torsos and dead animals, occasionally skidding in pools of blood. The sun burned overhead, too, making their journey harder and their heads ache. Their lips and faces cracked after being exposed to the sun for so long.

Amanda began to see a resemblance in Tim to the zombies behind them.

She pulled out the small water bottle she had taken from their last stop for food and drink, finished the few drops that remained, and threw it to the ground. Then, they both stopped.

Ahead of them was a group of some eight or nine zombies squabbling over a recently killed survivor, or even another zombie—it was hard to tell.

Until then, the biggest groups they had encountered had been small, although constant. There were zombies everywhere, shuffling and staggering around, but their two so-called bodyguards had been too strong for the others to pose a threat. Besides, Amanda realized they were able to communicate with each other; as soon as any zombie approached and threatened them, they quickly backed off, following a series of grunts and yelps by their protectors. A few times, their bodyguards had killed the odd lone zombie to feed on—tearing open their stomachs to access the intestines.
